Instrumental lessons are offered from year 2 upwards, or younger at the school's and instrumental teacher's discretion. Please note that some instruments are only suitable for older pupils due to the instrument's size, weight and the affect on the development of the teeth.

Please also note that as the music service only teach in school venues, during school hours, we are unable to offer lessons to adults due to safeguarding issues.

Termly lessons charges

The following charges apply to pupils attending maintained schools, free schools and academies in Slough from September 2017 - July 2019.

These charges are per school term of 10 lessons. It is assumed pupils will continue with lessons every term, until you tell us you wish to stop. See terms and conditions.

Our standard rates, which apply to most pupils, are in green.

If you are on a low income, you may be entitled to pay less for lessons.

How lessons are offered

Lessons are offered in groups of up to 7 pupils in a lesson, or individually (one-to-one). Group lessons are more effective and affordable, and are recommended, especially for beginners. You can request an individual lesson if you wish, but this is at a much higher cost. Individual lessons are appropriate in certain circumstances, such as the instrument being learned and the standard of the pupil.

We deliver a minimum of 30 lesson per academic year, averaging 10 per term. Group lessons are arranged as follows:
2 pupils - 20 minutes. 3 or 4 pupils - 30 minutes. 5 - 7 pupils - 45 minutes

Lessons are offered in school subject to the agreement of each schools' headteacher. We do not offer lessons in individuals' homes.

Instrument hire

You will need an instrument to learn, so that you can have lessons and take the instrument home to practice between lessons. Most pupils (especially for the first year of learning) hire an instrument from us, rather than buy their own. We are able to loan instruments to pupils at a reasonable cost (only £10.00 for low income families). We encourage pupils to buy their own instrument after a few terms of learning; please ask us for advice before buying an instrument. We do not offer hire for all instruments - please contact us to see if we have the instrument you require available for hire.

Why use Slough Music Service teachers

Slough Music Service is provided by Slough Borough Council, supported by Beechwood School and funded by central government. This means we are subject to rigorous service and safety standards, receive funding to help keep lesson fees as low as possible, and are accountable to government for the quality of our services.

Our teachers are all qualified musicians and have been recruited by musicians and teachers under the 'safer recruitment' guidelines which is now a national regulation for all local authority teachers. All our staff are subject to regular enhanced Criminal Records Bureau checks, are monitored under our quality assurance procedures and receive regular training to update and enhance their skills. In cases of disagreement, we have a rigorous complaints procedure.

*Subsidised/free lessons are normally only available for group lessons, and are only available for one lesson per pupil. It may be possible to receivesubsidised individual lessons in certain circumstances; individual cases should be raised with the music service who will assess each request.

^Subsidised instrument hire is only available when the pupil is having regular (weekly) lessons through Slough Music Service (tuition or music centres).

Children in Care (Looked after Children)

We do not charge lesson fees for children who are in local authority care . Please inform us if the pupil is in local authority care.
